Background

I am a Phonetician from Berlin/Munich with a Ph.D. in Phonetics and Speech Processing and a background in Music and German studies. In my research, I am using temporal auditory feedback perturbation to probe the cognitive representation of speech timing. With this method, we investigate the role of auditory feedback for establishing and controlling temporal patterns of speech and explore the interplay between feedback and feedfoward mechanisms in speech production. The additional assessment of individual perceptual and motor abilities of our participants allows for conclusions about how their auditory feedback or temporal feedforward capacities shape the responses to temporal auditory feedback perturbations.

Current Research

Our current research projects investigate responses to temporal perturbations in Quebec French speakers (tested at Brams https://brams.org/members/miriam-oschkinat-ph-d/) who are musicians or non musicians and compare their responses in speech and music production. This research can give insight into common mechanisms of timing in music and speech production. The second direction focusses on persons who stutter, who are known to show timing deficits in speech and non-verbal productions. Temporal auditory feedback perturbation can help us gain knowledge about differences in the incorporation of auditory feedback into the speech production process and the control and of timing mechanisms between fluent speakers and persons who stutter.
